They’re available on our Etsy store now and can be printed in time for Christmas, plus if you’re after something a little more bespoke, just send us an email and we’re always happy to quote for custom jobs.
A couple of weeks ago we welcomed the great and the good into our workshop as part of the annual Cockpit Arts Summer Open studios. We were running demonstrations on our, lovingly restored, treadle platen press; showing people the basics of how it works, the principles of letterpress and then letting the brave ones step up to the plate and have a go. We were printing greyboard beer mats with a composed design from our usual collection and we thought it’d be nice to break out the super bright fluorescent orange for the event. Fun and games all round and no lost fingers either! Plus it was a chance to show off our new range of wedding stationery and personalised stationery sets.
We also launched several new products over the weekend, namely our Pencil Notebook, which is a flip top style with a concealed pencil tucked away and graph paper inside, plus we also had two new card designs; Get Some Cider Inside Yer & The Big Beard Boys Brigade. There were our new generic Save The Date cards as well which can be used for anything from weddings to birthdays to picnics. Finally there were our two new limited edition prints; If It Is To Be and Even The Smallest Crank. Both were printed on our flatbed proofing press and were composed from our larger woodblock type.
Seeing as it’s (technically) Summer, it’s time to run some workshops again! We’ve just put up a list of 10 dates, all of them are evening sessions, as they proved the most popular in the past, but we’re running them two days a week, every week until August. For a full description of what they cover check out the workshops page. All the dates and links to the Eventbrite listings are below where you can purchase tickets.

Coming up this week, starting on Thursday night, is the annual Cockpit Arts Summer Open Studios, and this year they’re celebrating their 30th birthday! As per usual, we’ll be opening our doors along with 170 other craftspeople and makers across the two sites. We’re busily putting the finishing touches to some new products that we’ll be launching at the event, plus we’ll have our full range of newly designed wedding stationery on display.
We’ll also be running live demonstrations of our 120 year old treadle platen printing press, on Friday 3rd June, Saturday 4th June and Sunday 5th June at from 1pm – 2pm and 3pm – 4pm. We’ll be showing off the techniques involved in letterpress printing along with how we run the venerable beast, plus visitors can have a go and pull their own keepsake print to take away. Anyone who has visited our studio will know that space is limited, so arrive early if you want to see the action properly!

And so our season of shows draws to a close, we’d like to extend a hearty thanks to everyone who came to see us at the Renegade Craft Fair, our own Open Studios and Cockpit Arts and last weekend’s Etsy Made Local; they were all fantastically busy and we had a great time meeting tons of lovely people and other designer makers. A big thanks to all the event organisers too for putting on such great events!

Anyone who came to our Open Studios or Etsy Made Local will have seen that we have also just released some new canvas tote bags. Fresh off the presses, they are made from 100% natural 10 oz cotton, and come with a 10cm gusset so they’re extra strong and can fit plenty of bits & bobs, odds & sods or just general stuff!!!
They’re available on our Etsy store right now, in fairly limited quantities, but we should have more done soon. Speaking of online stores; it’s getting perilously close to Christmas and our cut off points for getting orders out before then are as follows:
14th December – Worldwide
18th December – UK
Any orders placed after those dates will still be sent but may not reach you until January, so get in quick!
Last Sunday we had a nice afternoon in the arches of Kachette under the trains in Shoreditch taking part in the special edition of Crafty Fox for the London Design Festival. The space was very nice, and comes across far moodier and mysterious in the photos than it was in real life!
It was a good day, meeting plenty of LDF wanderers and fellow craftspeople, plus we also launched three new cards on the occasion; to go with the East End setting we have Oi Oi Saveloy
Plus we’ve done two more folding cards in a similar fashion to the Father’s Day card we did a few months back Exclamation & Bang Bang. They are both printed with some of our lovely woodblock and stupendously detailed brass picture blocks, plus they fold out to display on a shelf or mantelpiece. They also come with our new buff envelopes too.
If you missed us at Kachette, we’ll be at the next Crafty Fox gathering at the Bussey Building in Peckham on the 10th of October. 11Am – 5pm, FREE entry. 90 designer/makers taking part plus: live art in the courtyard, poodle parlour workshop by Garudio Studiage and the Lost Lanes, craftivist workshop with Sarah Corbett, Animal Alphabet book signing with Kay from Ketchup on Everything, origami with Katie Guild, stitched portraits by In-Stitch You (Saturday only) and The Rhythm Parlour pop-up barber (Saturday only). Enjoy tunes from the Crafty Fox DJ’s and a full bar.

Well friends, Open Studios has been and gone and we spent a lovely sunny weekend introducing a great number of people to the wonders of letterpress and Cockpit Arts as a whole. For any of you who were there, you may have seen our new Wall Of Alphabetical Ephemera (its official name), in which we went through our collection of woodblock type and printed up a medley in a range of colours for all to peruse and purchase.
We also took the opportunity to release a number of new designs and products. Firstly there are our Letterpress Coasters; each design was hand-cut as a printing block to prevent damage to our vintage woodblock and lead type, but they were still printed, by hand as well, in our presses. The oil based ink we use as standard is waterproof and we tested an early sample by submerging it in the sink for a couple of days! The wood itself is 3mm plywood in a natural colour.
Next up are three new card designs, perfect for celebrations, congratulations, commiserations or just salutations. Each of the designs was composed with lead type and brass picture blocks from our collection along with some more hand-cut decorative elements for the background.
All these products are available on our Etsy store at the links below.

Lastly, we’ve just listed some more workshops for the next couple of weeks. We’ll be aiming to run a number of sessions through the summer so keep checking back regularly or follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to be kept informed of any new dates.
19th of May Evening Session
30th of May Morning Session
30th of May Afternoon Session
We are pleased to announce that we have now properly launched our Personalised Letterpress Stationery sets which we previewed at the last Open Studios at Christmas. Up until now, we have produced fully bespoke stationery for a number of businesses and individuals but we wanted to offer a more straightforward option to customers who may not want a fully bespoke service or the minimum quantities required for us to produce a design, but still would like to have their own personalised note paper or notelets.
So we have started off by creating six listings on our Etsy site; separating the options by three typefaces and two formats initially, plus there are two layouts and twelve colours to choose from as well.
To order, we’ve made it as simple as possible; just select from the various options, add in the name and address you’d like us to compose and you can pay for it securely through Paypal or any standard debit / credit card. We’ll then email you a digital proof to confirm the details. Once we’ve received confirmation, we’ll compose the type, print your stationery and send it out, wrapped in sturdy buff paper with a custom gift tag to match.
Ultimately we will be adding more designs, layouts and typefaces to the range but we’re starting off with these. If you are looking for something a bit more special; a different paper stock perhaps, some ornamentation, two colour printing, a different layout, different typeface, etc, then just send us an email and we’d be happy to discuss a bespoke job.

Now that it has successfully launched, we are pleased to announce that we have been working on a commission with the Museum of London on a range of letterpress products for their shop as part of the new Sherlock Holmes exhibition.
The designs themselves were produced by A Plus B Studio, who did all the identity work for the exhibition as well as the custom typeface, whilst we were brought in to do the actual printing and apply our stationery & product design skills to the range.
Focusing on the writings of Arthur Conan Doyle, the designs were all heavily based on a selection of well known, and slightly less famous, quotes and styled in a way to evoke the bold, headlines of 19th century newspapers and billheads. The colour palette was based on the Booth’s poverty maps, and custom mixed to create a range of muted, Victorian scarlet and orange, mustard yellow, pea green, and cobalt blue.
We were particularly pleased with the blind deboss on the limited edition prints, tucked away in the bottom right corner opposite the edition number.
All the products are available in the Museum of London shop and via their online store, but if you’re in London any time between now and the 12th of April then pop by and check the exhibition out.
Ladies and gents, boys and girls; we are now up and running at this year’s Pick Me Up festival at Somerset House! Starting today and running until the 5th of May, we are there along with a host of graphic artists, illustrators, designers, collectives and many more, plus there are daily events, workshops talks and special guests.
As I may have mentioned, at our stand we are collaborating with Ms. Catherine McGinniss to offer the public the chance to have a go at both printing and bookbinding, in the form of cover labels and ex libris bookplates from us and stab-bound notebooks from Ms. McGinniss.
Our full ranges of products are also available along with our newly released Flip Top Notepads and our new style of overprinted, woodblock greetings cards.
So come on down and visit us to have a go and see some new things too!

We’re still putting the finishing touches to our combined display area at Somerset House for this year’s Pick Me Up festival. The stand is built, the wallpaper is up, the Adana is in position and Catherine’s display area is also shaping up nicely too.
