Now that it has successfully launched, we are pleased to announce that we have been working on a commission with the Museum of London on a range of letterpress products for their shop as part of the new Sherlock Holmes exhibition.
The designs themselves were produced by A Plus B Studio, who did all the identity work for the exhibition as well as the custom typeface, whilst we were brought in to do the actual printing and apply our stationery & product design skills to the range.
Focusing on the writings of Arthur Conan Doyle, the designs were all heavily based on a selection of well known, and slightly less famous, quotes and styled in a way to evoke the bold, headlines of 19th century newspapers and billheads. The colour palette was based on the Booth’s poverty maps, and custom mixed to create a range of muted, Victorian scarlet and orange, mustard yellow, pea green, and cobalt blue.
We were particularly pleased with the blind deboss on the limited edition prints, tucked away in the bottom right corner opposite the edition number.
All the products are available in the Museum of London shop and via their online store, but if you’re in London any time between now and the 12th of April then pop by and check the exhibition out.
We’ve just recently finished a commission for some friends of ours at Pedal + Tread. They’re a husband and wife team who have just started up as an independent, and online retailer focusing on all manner of essentials and accessories for outdoor living.
They’re dedicated to working with makers and craftspeople from Scandinavia and the UK and they teamed up with us to help produce some original products to help launch their store.
The idea was to make a notebook set, similar in format to our own Alphabet notebooks and Idea Pads, but with a selection of typographic designs based on quintessential quotes about outdoor life, travel and cycling.
Aesthetically they were great fun to design as the simple, more modernist style was a real change from our ornamental work. We also tried to keep to a more subtle palette with natural colours that matched the Pedal + Tread logo.
Below are some shots of the notebooks in production and there will be a short interview with us going up on their site soon as well.

With one week to go, no rx the preparations continue apace for our London Design Festival event. We are currently in a flurry of activity working to get everything ready, pilule not least of which are the commissioned bespoke products that we are producing with Fortnum & Mason. We’ve designed a range of six greetings cards plus a new style A5 double notebook set all to celebrate the history of the store. We’re just putting the finishing touches to them now but here are some work in progress shots from last week:
Test print detail of part of the notebook 2-colour design; gold ink onto Fortnum’s turquoise / eau de nil.
Our press being inked up in a rather fetching, ailment and not frequently seen from us, shade of pink for two of the colourways on the greetings cards. One is pink and grey, the other pink and purple.
All the finished products will be exclusively available through Fortnum & Mason and launched during the event. Additionally we’ll be producing some of them all week, live in store on our press so you can come see how they were made.
Following on from our summer Open Studios (and a big thank you to everyone who visited our little corner of Clerkenwell), cost we’ve just completed a couple of nice commission jobs. We’ve always offered a mix of commission services as well as our own range of products and after an extended period of production printing it’s good to be able to switch over to something different.

This is part of a series of interesting projects for Guerilla Books; a fine, independent publisher of curious literature. Their beautiful limited edition books are all designed, printed and bound in the UK, and they contacted us to design and produce various items of ephemera as well. First up was a certificate for those who join their Collectors Club. Here are some shots of the printing process and intense close-up detail:
