So we have returned from our escapades last weekend, having talked to ten train loads of passengers, given out hundreds of free postcard prints and developed a new found respect for the staff who had to push those trolleys all day everyday!
It started bright and early on the train from Victoria. With our modified trolley all cleaned up, branded and packed full of equipment, we set off to Brighton. Unsure of how the public would respond to being offered a free letterpress, limited edition print rather than a sandwich and a cup of tea, we were pleasantly surprised as many people were thoroughly interested on their way to the beach. Information on the Village of Type, Ditchling Museum and the Brighton Festival was dished out aplenty along with dozens of prints too. Arriving at Brighton there was just enough time for a coffee re-fuel before we were off again back to London.
All in all we did ten trips on mostly busy to packed trains full of people heading to the beach or the Brighton Festival itself, about 600 prints were pulled and dished out and we had chats with tons of people, introducing many to Ditchling Museum and village.
It’s that time of year again, plus Cockpit Arts is celebrating it’s 30th birthday too! As per usual, we’ll be opening our doors along with 170 other craftspeople and makers across the two sites. We’ll be running live demonstrations of our 120 year old treadle printing press as well, along with the chance to pick up a free one off print. We’re at the Holborn site and the dates and open times are listed below:
Holborn 2nd – 5th June
Opening Times: Thurs 6 – 9pm, Fri, Sat & Sun 11am – 6pm
Cockpit Yard, Northington St, London, WC1N 2NP
Deptford 10th – 12th June
Opening times: Fri 11am – 9pm, Sat & Sun 11am – 6pm

Having just completed one madcap event involving printing with a steamroller, we’re straight onto the next one this weekend; Letterpress on Board!
Once again in conjunction with Ditchling Museum and as part of their Village of Type celebration of 100 years of the Johnston typeface, we are setting ourselves up to do some live letterpress printing on a train. To coincide with the start of the Brighton Festival this weekend, we’ll be taking an Adana 8×5, fitted to a specially modified trolley, on several trips between London Victoria and Brighton. We’ll offering the public a chance to have a go at printing and take away a specially designed postcard for free.
We created the design itself with a mixture of regular Gill Sans, and some of the more diverse variations such as Gill Sans Cameo and Gill Sans Light Shadowed, from our collection of lead type.
So if you’re heading down to Brighton for the festival this weekend, or up to London for that matter, and fancy printing one of these postcards, then look out for us on the following trains:

10.20 : London Victoria to Brighton via Hassocks

We’re halfway through our run of events and fairs this winter season but the biggest two are just around the corner. In less than a week we’ve got the annual Cockpit Arts Christmas Open Studios; starting this coming Thursday evening with a late night preview. As per usual, we’ll be opening our doors to the general public along with 170 other designer makers over the two sites, so that anyone can come along and talk to us, see our workspaces and peruse our wares. We’ll have our treadle press running on and off during the weekend plus we’re aiming to have some new products available just in time for Christmas.
Then in a craft-tastic double-whammy, the weekend after we’re taking part in Etsy Made Local, as part of their flagship shopping event in the Vinyl Factory, Soho from the 4th to the 6th of December. We’ll also be bringing one of our Adanas and offering to let people have a go at making their own customised notebooks, ideal for a personalised present!

In other news, we’re pleased to announce that we will be taking part in the next couple of Crafty Fox events; as part of the London Design Festival on the 27th of September and also at the Bussey Building in Peckham on the 10th of October. It was great to work with them as part of Manmade 2015 so we’ll be exhibiting with them again!
So Manmade has been and gone and we had a great time down at the Truman Brewery, meeting plenty of new customers and other craftsmen (and crafts-ladies too). We had a pretty good spot and decorated our bit of wall with our alphabetical ephemera. Our have-a-go notebook customisation workshop did well as always with a wide variety of people lining up to try their hand at printing with the Adana.
The other interactive events were very popular as well; with some amazing scissor skills from the general public at Mr Wingate’s screen printing workshop, and a veritable crowd of eager acrylic-fanciers for the jewellery workshop with our chums Ruth and Brendan from I Am Acrylic.
(Ruth sporting a lovely cactus on her head…)
It’s always nice when a new event does well, and a big thank you to Crafty Fox, Mr Wingate and Etsy Uk for organising it.
In other news, as you may have noticed, we’ve given the website a bit of a (late) spring clean and an update, with plenty of shiny new images and integrated the blog in here as well. We’ll be adding a bunch of other improvements over the next couple of months but it’s nice to have a bit of a fresh look!
We are pleased to announce that in just under 2 weeks we will be participating in Manmade; a new event to celebrate men who make stuff! Brought to you in conjunction with Etsy, Crafty Fox Market and Mr Wingate, we will be exhibiting our wares and also running letterpress demos and a walk-in, have-a-go workshop as we have done in the past, with one of our restored Adanas. There will be 50 other stalls, an art exhibition, talks, live art and numerous other workshops, including screen-printing with Mr Wingate and jewellery making with our chums I Am Acrylic.
It’ll be taking place at the Truman Brewery on Friday the 12th of June and Saturday the 13th of June, with late nights and entry is free!
For more information, check out Crafty Fox, Etsy’s blog, or follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for more updates.

We had a sterling time down at the Ditchling museum last Saturday, helping them celebrate their first birthday. It was a delightfully sunny day and we had a fine turn out of print and Eric Gill enthusiasts. Below are some shots from the event;
Plenty of visitors perusing the wares on our table and the displays from Unlimited and Delicious Industries.
Tom mid-way through a demonstration of how to print bookplates to a captive audience.
We printed a vast number of personalised bookplates during the event, although I think we may have forgotten to reset the counter before we arrived.
Finally, packed up and heading home, this was possibly the most idyllic (and slightly terrifying) driveway to a staff car park we have ever encountered!
We’d like to offer a big thank you to the Ditchling Museum for inviting us to take part in their celebrations, and we wish them all the best for the next year too.
We are pleased to announce that we will be taking part in celebrating the 1st birthday of the Ditchling Museum, since their major refurbishment in 2013. Taking place on Saturday the 20th of September, we’ll be there running our Adanas and offering our personalised book plates, where you can have a go at composing and printing your own. Plus we’ll also be selling all our stationery products, prints and ephemera as well.
There will be all manner of typographic shenanigans taking place all day along, check out the poster below and the museum’s own site for more information.
